both Provider and Instructor courses. Authorization must be obtained
from ENA prior to conducting any ENPC courses is responsible for
maintaining records of ENPC, mailing, as well as course manuals and
materials. Approves the continuing education credit hours (CECHs)
for ENPC.

procedures.

should be initially addressed at the jurisdiction level.
Emergency Nursing Pediatric
Provider Program Guidelines
Course
Description
The ENPC
Provider course is designed to provide core-level knowledge and
psychomotor skills associated with the delivery of professional
nursing care to the pediatric patient. This content is presented
through lectures and psychomotor skill stations.
It is
recognized that nursing practice varies between areas. The nursing
responsibilities, nursing practice acts, and institutional policies
which prescribe specific independent and interdependent nursing
activities and which govern practice must be considered when
implementing the described assessments, interventions, and
evaluations for specific patients.
Time Frame Formats
The
primary time frame for the ENPC Provider is at two and one-half day
(20-hour ) course. Alternate formats available are a two-day
(16-hour) course, or scheduling of the course over a period of
weeks. The proposed alternate format must be submitted in writing to
ENA and approved.
Participant/Instructor
Ratio
It is
recommended that the participant to instructor ratio for psychomotor
skill stations be 4:1, however it may be increased to 5:1 or 6:1, if
necessary. If the number of participants differs ratio must be
developed by the course director and submitted to ENA
Number of Course
Participants
1.
Courses may be scheduled for up to maximum of 48 participants.
Courses will be approved by ENA as long as an adequate number of
approved instructors for the number of participants scheduled to
take the course is present. In BC we have found that a maximum of
24-32 is most productive for learning.
Marketing
It is
important to market ENPC well in advance of the course in order to
ensure timely identification of course participants. Any marketing
materials should clearly identify required course registration
dates. A clearly identified cancellation policy is also
recommended. The course must be registered with ENA 12 weeks prior
to the start date.
It
must be clearly marked on the brochure advertising the course that
only registered nurses may participate in the testing of the
psychomotor skill stations and the multiple choice examination.
Participants
1. Registered Nurses
Registered nurses are the only health care providers eligible for
ENPC verification.
It is
recognized that nurses in a variety of clinical areas may desire to
take the ENPC and benefit from the course. Regard less of clinical
background, all participants must be encouraged to thoroughly read
the ENPC Provider Manual prior to taking the course.
The Provider manual should be made available to participants at
least 4 weeks prior to the course.
Health Care Providers Desiring to Attend ENPC as Auditors
Health
care providers, such as licensed practical nurses (LPN), licensed
vocational nurses (LVN), emergency medical technician-paramedics (EMT-P),
and physician assistants (PA) may attend the lecture and psychomotor
skill stations. The may not participate in the testing of the
psychomotor skill stations or take the multiple choice examination.
They do not receive a verification card. The following procedure
applies:
a. The
participants should be provided with an ENPC or TNCC
Provider Manual to facilitate the learning process.
b.
Include the names of these individuals on the Summary Performance
Report Form and class roster.
c. They
do NOT participate in the Multiple Choice Examination Answer Sheet
or skill stations examinations.
d. The
indirect fee must be submitted for each of these participants.
e. "Auditor" is written next to the person’s name, and the number of
CECHs awarded is recorded.
Guidelines for Successful ENPC Provider Completion
1. The
participant may attend the lectures and/or psychomotor skill station
teaching, or choose to attend only the evaluation portion of the
course. All participants must be provided with their own manual.
Manuals cannot be shared.
2. For
verification, the participant must complete the following course
requirements:
a. Multiple choice examination
The
multiple-choice examination consists of 50 questions. The
examination evaluates the acquisition of the content presented in
the ENPC lectures, course manual, and psychomotor skill stations.
The
passing score is 80% (40 correct answers). If an individual achieves
less than 70%, the multiple choice examination alone may not be
retaken. However, if an individual achieves 70% to 78% on the
exam AND successfully completes all psychomotor skill
stations, he or she may be allowed to retake the examination one
time according to the following criteria:
-
The student
must retake the multiple choice examination either immediately
following the course or within two weeks of the last day of the
course. The arrangements are at the discretion of the course
director.
-
The course
director shall be responsible for identifying an instructor for
the re-evaluation.
-
If the
individual is unsuccessful on retest, he or she may retake the
course or challenge another approved course.
Psychomotor skill station evaluation
The
following psychomotor skill stations are evaluated: Pediatric
Multiple Trauma, Triage, and Pediatric Resuscitation. The skill
stations are graded based on objective data.. To successfully
complete the Pediatric Multiple Trauma and Pediatric Resuscitation
stations, all of the critical criteria, plus 70% of the total points
identified on the evaluation sheet, must be demonstrated. To
successfully complete the Triage skill station, the participant must
correctly prioritize three scenarios. The participant may be
re-evaluated in only one skill station, only one time. In such a
case, the participant is retaught, as recommended on the Skill
Performance Report Form, prior to re-evaluation. If the participant
is unsuccessful in more than one station, he or she may repeat the
course or challenge another approved course.
The
participant, who does not successfully complete the skill station
evaluation, may be re-evaluated in only one skill station, only one
time. In such a case, the participant is given a review of the
station by an ENPC instructor, as recommended on the skill
performance report form, prior to re-evaluation. If the participant
does not successfully complete more than one station, he or she may
repeat the course or challenge another approved course.
Re-exam
A
participant may retake only one psychomotor skill station or
the multiple choice written examination. If a participant fails more
than one testing component (written examination or any psychomotor
skill station), he or she is not eligible to retest. The participant
has the option to repeat the entire course.
ENPC
Recognition
Provider Verification
The
Emergency Nurses Association will issue a card verifying the
successful completion of the ENPC Provider course. The card will be
distributed at the course by the course director. Expiration of
verification will occur four years from the last day of the month in
which the card was issued.
Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECHs)
CECH is
awarded to participants who attend the ENPC Provider course
regardless of their successful completion.
If an RN
participant chooses not to participate in the evaluation component,
the individual can receive partial CECHs for the didactic component.
The number of CECHs awarded to each RN participant are to be
indicated on the Summary Performance Report Form.
Reverification Process for ENPC Providers
a. It is
the recommendation of ENA that ENPC providers either attend a
Reverification course or retake the entire course every 4 years to
review the course content and acquire the knowledge reflected in the
updated ENPC Provider Manual. Reverification must
occur before your current provider status expires.
Changes in Course Size
If ENA
is notified in writing (mail, fax or E-mail) of changes in course
size at least 72 hours prior to the course, the indirect fee will
apply only to the new number of projected participants. The site
coordinator must communicate class size changes to the course
director 96 hours prior to the course.
